At a recent board learning experience, as the result of a small group discussion, the idea of board accountability came up. It is not uncommon for dedicated and engaged board members and executive staff to feel frustrated with those who are absent and disengaged. The conversation lingered in my thoughts, prompting me to reflect on whether I was doing enough in my role. The notion of “holding board members” accountable felt heavy, draining the joy and energy from the work.
A few days later, I started to consider the concept of achieving milestones as a way to discuss board engagement. After all, we expect the staff of an organization or business to have key performance indicators (KPIs). So why not apply the same principle to board members? Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and milestones are effective tools for monitoring and measuring progress toward goals.
Joining a board is more than just holding a title; it’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact. We will see results when we collaborate and cooperate in a well-organized effort. A committed staff team working closely with board members is essential for driving change within the organization, which ultimately leads to a positive impact in the community. Here are a few key milestones to focus on for a meaningful and rewarding experience.
Embark on a Learning Journey: Dive deep into understanding the organization, its mission, and the incredible people behind it. Knowledge is your strongest tool, and the more you know, the more impactful your contributions will be. This includes familiarizing yourself with board by-laws and meeting your responsibilities as a board member.
Engage Actively in Board Meetings: Participation isn’t just about attendance. Bring your voice to the table, share your insights, and engage in discussions that guide the future of the organization. Help keep the board at the strategy and the governance level.
Commit to Committee Work: Join committees that resonate with your passions. This is where the real work gets done, and your involvement can lead to innovative solutions and strategies.
Attend Signature Events: Make it a goal to attend at least two key events each year. Not only will you witness the organization’s impact firsthand, but you'll also foster connections and inspire others to join the cause.
Prioritize Generosity: Your financial support matters. Commit to making a significant yearly donation—your contribution can help propel the organization’s mission. If you are able, consider giving more than once per year.
Connect Others to the Mission: Think of individuals who could benefit from the organization’s services or who can help it thrive. Your connections can create a ripple effect of growth and support.
Showcase the Organization’s Work: Look for opportunities for the organization to demonstrate its achievements, such as presenting at conferences, participating in important meetings for networking, or connecting with funders or grant-giving organizations.
As you embark on this journey, remember that your role as a board member allows you to be a catalyst for change. Let’s work together to make a difference, engage our communities, and uplift those we serve. Your commitment can change lives.
When I reflect upon my own participation as a board member, I can see that I’ve achieved these milestones. I have also identified areas of improvements. Reflecting on these milestones a few times a year can help board members take a pulse of where they stand, and where they want to improve.
